A Search for Love

Introduction

Morning sun trickles over the walls in the city of darkness, ending the night. But this night was not as dark as other nights. The wounded traveler healed as the lamplighter brought compassion to the city. Now our traveler sees she is Love. As the city wakes, a search for Love begins.

A search for love

When the morning came,
I found the streets alive with rejoicing.

The lost had been found.
The hope of holding Love near had returned.

But Love was not found.
I searched through the alleys and at the gate.

Love, where have you gone?
You faded like a dream in morning light.

On the night of love,
you vanished in the arms of an old friend.

Was your heart taken?
Or given eagerly to another?

Rescued in his ark,
or were you drown in the flood of his past?

All the city mourns
for the loss of our Love that could have been.

No anger or hate,
but prayers for the adored traveler.

Wherever your road,
I pray you find joy and are wholly Love.

Because of your words,
the lamplighter now scares away the dark.

No cries in the night,
but sweet memories of your melody.

Take courage my heart.
Though your Love is gone, still greater remains.

The love of the Way
shows me behind these walls I cannot stay.

Wrap-up

The saying goes, you miss one hundred percent of the opportunities you don’t take. This idea is truer with love than any other area of our lives. I don’t think this means we should be rash or flippant, declaring our love for someone. We must learn to recognize when we truly love someone and not be afraid to tell them. Telling someone you love them is scary. You are making yourself vulnerable to being hurt. They may not feel the same. You might care for someone and receive nothing, or worse, rejection, in return.

Does this mean we should love less? May it never be! Jesus commands us to love one another. We must recognize there are different loves. The love of a spouse, friend, or family member, to name a few. As humans, we need different love from different people. Our relationships have varying depths and closeness, and they meet different needs. When was the last time you told a dear friend you loved them?

Love takes time to grow. If someone doesn’t love you the same way, don’t despair. Learn to love people in different ways. Remember, we have many needs and need different loves. Cherish the love you can give to others. If someone does not want your love, that is their choice. It does not mean you are unlovable, or bad at loving others. It is often our sin which impedes us receiving love from others; this happens in our relationship with God.

Without being courageous to love other people, we cannot be loved by others.
